El Desafío del Júcar, Ribera del Júcar wine presentation & quiz - Astoria Palace Hotel,Valencía  26th Oct. 2009 

The Dominación de Origin Ribera del Júcar was born under the joint inititive of a group of wineries & co-op´s from the province of Cuenca with the aim of producing high quality wine, a differenciation from the high volume lower quality producers in the region. After 6 years marketing its wines it was an apt moment to introduce its offerings to the Valencian critics, wine buffs & the hospitality industry. The new format of presentation  was in the form of a quiz were the participants were obliged to remember bodega details, label information, caracteristics of the wines etc. whilst enjoying the cata, including a final blind tasting. Javier Prósper, the president of the D.O was satisfied with the result of this pioneering inititive, a very positive experience for all in attendance.

       On the 11th Oct. we went down to L´Alcudia for their 15th Aniversary Feria Gastronomica 2009. The bono entitled 10 tastings of local cheese, cured meats from the Costera & beyond, fabulous pastries & sweet treats with almonds, honey & aniseed, the typical moorish ancestorial recipes like the ones we enjoyed from Pastisseria Sirope in Xativa, of course accompanied with an offering of wines from Bodegas Belda,Torrevellisca, Enguera & El Angosto to name a few. We brought back a range of artesan delights including sausages from Tarbena and pasteles de boniato, the pastry tarts with anis. After lunch we bumped into a friend of ours, a local artist who has family in the town and he invited us to his new home to see his latest artwork over a coffee & honey lazos. We couldn´t refuse, could we..?

The Consejo Regulador of D.O. Rioja presented the new vintages in Valencia, this year with a new format called "Salon de Novedades de Vinos de Rioja", a collection of almost 300 wines from around 100 bodegas. The new wines released to the market in 2009 range from the 2006 crianza, 2005 reserva and the 2003 gran reserva with many wines exceeding the obligatory barrel aging times.The world renowned classic style wines were complemented with newer inovations in line with market trends. It was an interesting evening with a chance to meet friends after the summer break. The event was covered by Las Provincias TV live and was a well attended event.

The Salon de Vinos de Navarra opened its doors in Valencia with a selection of best wines from 12 bodegas from the Denominación. The president of the Consejo Regulador de D.O de Navarra, Pilar Garcia-Granero was present for the degustación of wines & tapas and attended by many professionals of hosteleria of Valencia. Navarra is one of the most  prestigious in the panorama of Spanish wines producing all the styles of wine with success,the reds modern & structured; the whites glycéricos & silky; the fresh garnacha rosé & the sweet small graped moscatels. Very enjoyable and intuitive.

   We will be attending the traditional sausage fair in Requena where you may taste the cured meats, sausages, hams, cheeses and the famous wines from the area. There will be degustación of roasted pig and various other typical local dishes; the cured meats of Requena only made with the finest ingredients, almost all by hand with garaunteed authenticity. The taste sensations to be complimented by the many excellent wines from the D.O Utiel-Requena with wine tasting sessions organised by Ferevin, definitely a taste experience not to miss.
